Welcome to our website.
Here you will find all the information about The Tara and more.

The Tara is a family owned business and was opened in May 1995. Many expansions later the Tara is now one of the biggest bars in Amsterdam - although it still maintains that special intimate and friendly atmosphere. Over the years the Tara’s first priority is still to provide top quality food, drink, service and entertainment to its customers - regulars and first time visitors alike.

The original idea of the Tara was to bring the genuine atmosphere of Ireland to the heart of cosmopolitan Amsterdam.
But the Tara is no theme pub, instead the two distinct cultures merge giving customers the best of both worlds.
The Tardis-like Tara may look tiny from the street but visitors are always pleasantly surprised by its open and inviting interior. Many interior features have been shipped from Ireland - including parts of an 19th century church.

The main hall features an interesting plasterwork sculpture. Leather couches and armchairs nestle in front of not one but two grand open fireplaces - a rare feature in Amsterdam. The latest expansion features our new bar with noble stones and a buffalo head, and our new open kitchen. Irish paintings and poems are decorating the walls.

The snug is the perfect place to relax. It is situated in the heart of The Tara, next to the Pool room. This whole area is gold!

The Tara enjoys an excellent and sometimes intriguing mix of clientele, young and old, ex-pats, Amsterdammers and visitors. Located as it is in the business hub of town, the Tara is popular with merchant bankers and stock exchange traders who can regularly be spotted digging into "biertjes and bitterballen" after work. Proximity to the University means that a fair number of students swell the happy throng at the weekends. (Tara "weekends" run from Wednesday until Sunday)

History of the building: former home of Max Beckman
World famous German expressionist artist Max Beckman lived in the building on the Rokin where The Tara is now located between 1937 and 1947 and produced some of his most important work there.

Max Beckman was born in Leipzig in 1884 and studied art at the Grossherzogliche Kuntschule, Weimar from 1900.
In 1904 he settled in Berlin and enjoyed considerable success between 1912 and 1937. When his work was categorized as "degenerate art" by the Nazis in 1937 he fled with his wife to Amsterdam.
He lived at Rokin 85 for 10 years and while prohibited from exhibiting or teaching by the Nazis during the occupation produced a great deal of his work there. After leaving Amsterdam in 1947 Beckman moved to the United States where he taught and painted until his death in New York in 1950.

Recently Max Beckman's old house has been restored as a luxury appartment and is available for short term rental from The Tara. For more details contact The Tara, on telephone number 0031 (0)6 512 45 918 or email to info@thetara.com
